Hawkize NCAA Tournament Picks
The crew at Hawkize has heard a wide variety of opinions on the tournament over the past few days. The “experts” aren’t giving us much of a chance, so we muted them and decided to come up with our own picks to set the record straight.

It’s Ron Mexico’s dirrty south–we’re just playing in it. Texas really stands no chance against the mighty Penn Quakers, especially after that pathetic Big 12 schedule they had to get them prepared for the tournament.
We’re looking forward to the Iowa-N.C. State rematch, where Iowa will again pull out the victory. Then we’re going to take our mini ACC-Big Ten Challenge a step further and destroy Duke since Indiana couldn’t get that done earlier this year.

Indiana is the obvious favorite in this bracket as they are the only Big Ten team in it, so their advancement to the Final Four is pretty much a given. Kansas, the Big 12 Tournament champions, fall to Bradley in the first round.

This is probably the most interesting bracket as Michigan State and Illinois, both seasoned NCAA Tournament teams, face off in the Elite Eight. We took Michigan State in that one, not because we want to see Illinois lose, but… yeah, we want to see Illinois lose.

We’re going with Hampton as the 64th team mainly because we’re still laughing about their win over Iowa State in a first round meltdown that we all remember so well. Ohio State and Wisconsin will match up in the Elite Eight. Unfortunately, one team has to lose, and it’s Wisconsin. We’re not saying the loss is fair, we’re just saying it’s a loss.

The Final Four is exactly what you would expect. Six of the Elite Eight teams are from the Big Ten, so it’s a given that four of them will advance to form an all Big Ten Final Four. In a rematch of Big Ten Championship Game, Iowa pummels Ohio State for the third time this year, and we’re playing for keeps this time. Final score: 500-0.
Ohio State can buy…I mean cheat…oops, win…who am I kidding. Ohio State can cheat their way to the NCAA Championship game, but cheaters never win, nor does anyone else when Jeff Horner doesn’t want them to.
Horner said that we’ve got some games left, “six to be exact”, and we’re not about to doubt him after he blew up on the rest of the league in the Big Ten tournament. Horner’s sweet J and will to win along with Greg Brunner’s all around badassness are going to carry us all the way to an NCAA title.
On Iowa,
GO HAWKS!

I need not to comment because this is the best article to grace the hawkeye kingdom.
This bracket was so obvious to fill out. Perfect picks.
A more interesting scenario is who would win: Iowa State vs. THE Iowa City Third Team All Metro Wheelchair Basketball Team.
Since any division one team’s bench can beat Iowa State, and wheel chair teams play sitting down, I’m going to have to go with the Third Team.
well not only does iowa state not make the NIT but breaking news iowa state might be guilty of illegial recruting and not 2 hours after that stinson and blalock are declaring for the draft werid huh it sounds to me like isu is gulty as charged they will suck big time next year and will not be able to play any post season games for like 2 or 3 years ISU you fucking suck werid thing is there like cheating and they still really fucking suck. GO HAWKS!!
Here’s a couple articles on both situations:

I love the tournament picks guys. Well done.
I have a good idea for a tournament that ISU can play in this year. They should come to Iowa City and play City High, West, and Regina in a round robin tournament shootout.
oh PS, for everyone still in Iowa City, where is going to be the best place to watch the game tommorrow? I was either tihnking Spo Co or Mickeys
Buffalo Wild Wings is where the MikeHawk will be nested.
You guys rock!!! I’ve told several people about this website and they’re all hooked!!! Keep up the great work and GO HAWKS!!!
PLEASE PLEASE get this link and read the article. Hawk fans will be very happy.

and the shit piles on more, Wayne Morgan got fired. What a failure.
ISU is just absolutely clueless. If you’re going to run a crooked program, you should at least be good at something (see ohio state). You know its bad when they have to cheat to lose.
Also, when I saw all this junk happening, I couldn’t help but think of the genius ad campaign designed for wayne morgan and the cyclowns earlier this season…
My predecessors partied with college students
And downloaded lots of kiddie porn.
Everyone is expecting me to fail miserably.
I WILL
I for one am amazed at the amount of press two perennial “me first” guards are getting from ISU, and I’m amazed at how horribly that program is run. Can someone explain to me how someone whose career highs came against Mountain State is a first round pick???
Meanwhile, I regret to inform you all that the Syracuse-Iowa matchup I so desparately wanted to see (Mikehawk can fill you all in) will not be happening as my team decided not to show up last night against a fucking Big 12 also-ran.
I have no clue who would win a game of SU-Iowa, but I would have loved to have seen it. Oh well.
Now I just hope someone (could it be the Hawkeyes???) ends JJ ReDICK’s career.
Fuck Duke
NO!!!!!!!!!!
Typical Iowa basketball game. Goodbye Steve Alford, hello anybody who can win a fucking 1st round game
YES YES YES YES YES. I am laughing my ass off!! This makes the whole tourney … Hey Steve, did Jeff Horner “IMPOSE HIS WILL” on Northwestern State? What a choke job! Goodbye seniors! Goodbye miracle year! Goodbye Alford (which makes me sad, because ‘The Hair’ is a sparkling 3-9 against the Illini).
Whenever Illinois loses I will be pissed, but even if it is against Washington at least they made it to the first weekend!
Eat shit and live …
Before anyone pins this on Alford, I’ll give you that a coach may account for a couple points, but Steve did not give up that double digit lead. Bru missed the free throw, nobody got a board that would have prevented the second shot, and according to the stat sheet, approximately 0 of our 20-some turnovers are credited to Alford. It is a shitty way to end the season, nothing more to say than that. So anyone that is going to start hammering Alford and try to pin this one on him should give him all of the credit for the 25 W’s we have sitting on our record this year.
Alford obviously didn’t go out there and physically lose this game. But look at the fact that northwestern st was a faster, more agressive, better conditioned team. That is Alford’s fault. That game is just like a typical Iowa game since he has been coach. I can’t count the number of times we’ve pissed games down our leg. I’m sure he’s happy about the outcome though, as this will be a perfect exit for him. Iowa really hates him now, all of the seniors are graduatiing, and no one will be sad to see him go to indiana.
I’m naming my bullets as we speak…
Just a little tidbit…Look at the numbers for the first four years of Davis/Alford with the players they recruited…
Alford 79-48 overall
34-30 Big ten
Davis 75-47 overall
34-38 Big ten
Three of Davis’s best years were his first three years here…with Olsen/Raveling recruits…Just some food for thought…
It is not Alford’s fault that we got complacent when we got our second double digit lead. Alford can’t make players chase down loose balls. Is it Alford’s fault that Horner sells out for a loose ball in an exhibition game (when he broke his tooth) and no one sells out for anything today…Fact of the matter is, sometimes we had fire, sometimes we didn’t. I am not walking around with a Stevie A. button on my chest, but I don’t understand how people can pin this on him and jump his ass after a 25-9 season. There is a reason they play a tournament and not just put the 1-2 teams in the championship, and it is because crazy shit like this happens. It happens every year, and it just so happens it happened to us this year.
It is not Alford’s fault at all. It is all the Iowa State fans fault. And i will find you….rest assured.
I am graduated high school in 1984 so I have vivid memories of Dr. Tom. I loved him. He had a horrendous record against Illinois, could never come across the river and get the best recruits and let the most worthless piece of shit in Iowa basketball history — Jess Settles — sit around and swallow a valuable scholarship for, I think, 9 years.
I also remember everybody — and I mean everybody — wanted Dr. Tom’s ass the last three years. And everyone wanted Alford, too.
I will say this for Dr. Tom, though —- class. He had (has) it, his teams always displayed it and he had the total respect of his peers.
A sucker punch to the gut(although in a wierd way I’m not totally surpirsed). Yea it sucks, but you cant take away that this was a great group of of seniors and a fun year to watch. Its just with this fucking tournament anything can happen and, really, its the teams fault for not putting the game away. These first round games are always land mines. E.g. Syracuse, OSU nearly losing to Davidson, Indiana, BC going to 2OT, Tennesse only wins by 2, etc. etc.. My point is that, as I said, anything can happen and yea it hurts, but who gives a FUCK. Its still only fucking basketball and (yea this is for you Illini) even the worst Hawkeye basketball team still wins ATLEAST one conference game a year. Now we can focus on the only sport that matters (yea I mean football and all you basketball fans…dont kid yourselves, please…This is America, not Latvia) In closing on this year of Hawkeye basketball… A good year with a great group of seniors, despite the downer ending. Thanks guys. Salute.
I hope you get hit by a drunk driver tonight.
And yet, Iowa and Illinois are still tied for number of national titles…
Keep living vicariously throuw a bunch of uneducated theifs, Oskee. Iowa will always be the finer institution.
Northwestern St. can eat shit and DIE!!! it is some of the carziest games and ending i have ver seen in the first round of this tourny iowa needed to put the fucking game away simple as that we had a 14 point lead at one time and then they go on a 14-0 run good god does iowa just play aggressive when they want to why not get the rebound so that they dont get that last second chance point to kill us well anyway i just can fall back on football cuz were good in that and it looks to be a great upcomming season to drive isu face into the dirt at kinnick but anyway kudos to the iowa basketball team on a good seson and a fun team to watch. GO HAWKS!!
Mikehawk, don’t make me bring up the license-plates-in-the-parking-lot argument (and you know what I mean) and embarrass Iowa further.
Here is an interesting site: Go to Big Ten’s official site and work your way to men’s sports total conference championships. There you will see all you need to know about the two schools.
(Although I will pull for Iowa men’s track and cross country as long as Mikehawk is studding for them).
And just in case Hawk fans think I won’t rip Illinois — I still feel the pain of their first-round loss to Austin Peay. The year was 86, I think, and Illini were a #3, too. So yes, it can and sometimes does happen.
Not to be racist, but did anyone else notice that Northwestern st. didn’t even have a single white player?
I about vommited in my mouth when the game ended. I’m going to add Northwestern State to the list of schools I forbid my children to go to out of athletic spitefulness.
Nonetheless, let’s not forget the other tournament Iowa is in this weekend. Iowa’s wrestlers are far out-performing the team’s pre-tournament ranking and currently sit at #2 after Session III of the tournament. Crazy Paul Bradley is still alive in the wrestle-backs and Johnston and Perry are in the title hunt. If Oskee-wow-wow were to check out the Guinness Book of World Records under most consecutive NCAA championships in any sport he would find Iowa Wrestling. We ain’t done cheering for the Hawks yet.
which just points out why this site should cover iowa wrestling more than basketball. The wrestling team never disappoints. go paul bradley!
Official Big Ten wrestling championships (not including this year):
Iowa 31 and 1 shared
Illinois: 17 and 4 shared
Indiana: 13 and 3 shared
Michigan: 11
Mich St./Minn: 8 each, with Minn sharing 1
Purdue: 6
Ohio St.: 2 and 1 shared
Hawks won 25 straight — 1972-73 thru 1997-1998. After that it has been: Minnesota, Iowa, Minnesota, Minnesota, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. Not sure who won this year.
At least were not the ONLY ones who went out in the first round. EX. Michigan State
Looks like you can take that bracket down now….nice knowing you, Iowa. I’m off to Indy first thing Monday!
I noticed you circled Hampton. Iowa, meet your Hampton.
Meet my middle finger, fucktard.
HUGE PROPS to Mikehawk. No doubt March 17,2006 is going to go down as THE most disastrous days in his personal sports history. First Iowa ass-fucked themselves, then Kansas chokes out for the second straight year.
Yet Mikehawk, despite vicious texts back-and-forth between us, still managed to own up and take his medicine. That is what having brass ones is all about, so a big salute to you, stud.
wow iowa let me down what the hell i had more faith in them than to lose to nowhere st. damn just shows people not to depend on the hawks for anything except failure when it is the most important
Let’s keep in mind that your team was never worthy of carrying expectations in the first place. You just finished a mediocre season where you didn’t participate in any form of postseason play, your head coach was just fired, and you’re looking at NCAA probation. Come back and talk shit when your team is actually worth a damn.
I’ll meet your middle finger as soon as you extract from your ass, faggot.
Allow me to eat my own stinking pile of shit. The Floundering ILL-ini turned out to be an even huger disappointment than Iowa. 26 wins and no Sweet 16 is NOT EXCEPTABLE. (I’ll be forced to pull for Bradley now).
Illinois ate shit, now I have to eat shit. Live by the sword, die by it, I guess.
Fuck that oskee-wow-wow. At least Illinois made the second round. 26 wins? Try winning the big ten tournament and not advancing a single game, thats unacceptable. What the f happened?
It’s the NCAA tournament–stuff like that happens regularly. It’s like me playing Tiger in golf. I’m going to lose 100 out of 100 rounds I play against him, but on one hole in one round he messes up, I don’t, and I win the hole. Improbable things happen in the tournament.
U GUYS ARE stupid. One turn deserves another
