NO ONE is going to relight that fire, at least not at the level Gable had it. The Tide spent years trying to find the next Bear Bryant. First, Ray Perkins, who PLAYED for Bear. 32-15-1 and out. Bill Curry, 26-10, three Jan 1 bowls but out because he neither played for nor coached for Bear and the Bama alumni couldn't stand it. Then Gene Stallings, who started 5-7, then went 65-10 to finish 70-17 with the school's 12th national title and two other top five finishes. He coached for Bryant and retired after 96. Enter Mike DuBose (played for Bear) who went 24-23, probation and everyone hated him. Then Dennis the traitor Franchione, now Mike Shula (played for). At some point you have to move on ...
