Out with the old…in with the older?
As you may have heard by now, head Iowa wrestling coach Jim Zalesky’s contract will not be renewed at the end of the year. In his nine year tenure at Iowa, he won three national titles and finished in the Top 10 in the NCAA every year. As much as it hurts to say this: we’re better than that. Sorry, Jim.
Jim handled himself with class and was an amazing coach, but it’s hard to follow Dan Gable. Case in point: look at the reception Islam gets from the world after trying to follow Christianity- bombing, rape, and pillaging throughout the countries that tend to practice it. In this case, Jim was Allah and Gable is Jesus- although Allah is cool for awhile, you get tired of him real fast and miss Jesus. Man, we miss Jesus around here.
Who are the candidates for replacement?
TOM BRANDS:
Tom is a gold-medal winner and a class act, and he would look good on the Hawkeye sideline. He’s an enigma in collegiate wrestling; he’d fit the bill of an Iowa wrestling coach well.
TERRY BRANDS:
Shit, why not?
DAN GABLE:
Don’t think he’ll come out of retirement? Yeah, well, we’re too busy staring at the 20 national titles to listen to you. Please come back, Dan. PLEASE?!

Gables the man but zeleski was a pretty good coach
We need to get something good now that cael is at isu because they might actually have an athletic program that can compete for a national title. i would give anything to see them hire gable and tom brands as co-headcoaches. those cheating steers and queers at choklahomo state would be shakin in their singlets
i would also like to say Z was a class act, but we have had some guys come through here that would have won 2-4 national titles under gable… (Paul Bradley)

Jim Gibbons said it best (of Zalinsky) It’s like
marrying your high school sweetheart and having to live with your father-in-law. (He got his dream job but had to perform in Gable’s shadow.)
Zalinsky, man? This isn’t Tommy Boy, it’s ZALESKY.
A bit of advice from an Alabama football fan — get clear of Gable. NO ONE is going to relight that fire, at least not at the level Gable had it.
The Tide spent years trying to find the next Bear Bryant. First, Ray Perkins, who PLAYED for Bear. 32-15-1 and out. Bill Curry, 26-10, three Jan 1 bowls but out because he neither played for nor coached for Bear and the Bama alumni couldn’t stand it.
Then Gene Stallings, who started 5-7, then went 65-10 to finish 70-17 with the school’s 12th national title and two other top five finishes. He coached for Bryant and retired after 96.
Enter Mike DuBose (played for Bear) who went 24-23, probation and everyone hated him. Then Dennis the traitor Franchione, now Mike Shula (played for).
At some point you have to move on …
Iowa has a wrestling tradition unmatched by anyone save OK state (more titles). If they chose to keep the Gable ties intact that coach will never live up to it. He can still win titles, still be great, still make your dick hard, but can’t ever be Gable himself, so be careful …
