Hawkize 2.0 Ideas
Over the past few months, the Hawkize Design Team has been collecting ideas and scouring the web for things to implement in Hawkize version 2.0. This post serves two purposes. One, to give you an idea of things we’ve been thinking of implementing and getting some feedback. And two, to give you a chance to make some suggestions of your own.
Here are some ideas we’ve had, in no particular order:
Aesthetics
- Navigation across top
- Text wraps around images (CSS)
- Article excerpts on front, must click through to see whole article
Features
- Upgrade blog engine
- Photo gallery
- Quotes (rotation on sidebar of good quotes from articles and comments)
- Video using YouTube
- Podcasts
- User registration (& Profiles?)
- Reading room with RSS feeds from different Hawkeye news sources
- Google Adwords
- Our other favorite team: whoever ISU is playing
Posts
- weekly pregame analysis of opponents
- contests ala M-Zone
- more contributors
For any idea, let us know if you like it, don’t like it, etc. and we’ll talk about it. We would also like to see suggestions and examples of other good features or posts. This is, after all, a community site…so your feedback counts.

all those idea sound sweet. lol but fuck, two weeks between posts, i think only you guys can fix that. i mean for real, what do you expect from us? we cant wait that long.
Haha…I’m flattered that you get anxious after a period of few posts.
The reality is that it’s hard to come up with good content (the type of posts you expect and deserve) during the spring and summer because neither of the major sports are going on.
Other sites (M-Zone, etc.) are able to keep things interesting even during the offseason, so the new “recurring” type posts (”series” is another way of putting it) are designed to help us with that. You’re absolutely right–ultimately we have to write the posts, and that’s our responsibility. But the more ideas you can give us for different types of posts, the easier it will be for us to write them.
It would also help if Andyram wasn’t so drunk all the time
We want it all, more more MORE! Colestal, will you be in Iowa city august 8th? I will be having a huge apt. party because Im turning 21. Happy days.
I might be in Orlando but thanks for the heads up. I’ll keep it in mind once I figure out when I’ll be in Iowa City.
As someone paid to write for a living I understand the occasional writer’s block. You guys do a good job of loving your Hawks and bashing the enemy, which is exactly what someone logging on to a site like this should expect.
More photos would be nice, although the occasional “working” off posts, i.e. the storm that destroyed Ames, are also a lot of fun.

Couple thoughts…
1) The pictures could be “live” - straight from flickr…maybe specify that they’re all Iowa Sports related…
2) Open source - so that others can contribute…
3) T-shirts or other competitions like Threadless…
4) Maybe start up other “locations”, like here in Denver, CO so that each has a local flavor…and then there could actually be ‘community event’ over here at the Sports Column or something???
If our crowd is big enough, I’d be all for throwing bashes at The Fieldhouse- as I don’t really hit Sports Column a lot, the Fieldhouse is a lot better atmosphere for those of legal age.
some really dirty t’s would be nice. especially ones bashing cyclones.
I’m all for Fieldhouse bashes too. As long as someone buys me a drink.

Working on a ‘Hawkize RSS Feed’ program… started out as a live page view then I realized, everyone who comes here already HAS A BROWSER… not everyone has an RSS tool… Like I said, I got bored.
How about a “loser of the week” like they do on 1460 on the radio

Great idea. Cy-Hawk flag football game every year. Iowa fans vs. State fans. It can be played the friday before the big game. Only there is a twist. You MUST be drunk. And to keep it straight, you must blow a certain percentage before kickoff and keep that percentage during the game. It fits together so well it has to work.
I can see a lot of problems with that… wouldnt it be too much work to make everyone blow? and how often do you make them blow? and what about people passing out because of heat/dehydration? you don’t think someone would get in trouble for that one? (making people be drunk) and if everyone was drunk.. flag football would turn into tackle/beat the fuck out of the cyclones football…. it’d def be hazardous. But i’m willing to give it a shot

What would be reallllly awesome is if we could get some good publicity and what not with it and get it played on the practice field(we’d obviously have to do it sober if it got that far though) or at Kinnick, even though it’d never happen at Kinnick, a man can still dream

Looking forward 2 coming 2 IC for the football game this year. Only towns in the Midwest better than IC R Madison and Lincoln (but they r bigger towns and may not actually b just college towns).

I’m not sure about navigation at the top, i think the side is great. DEfinately though has user registration and profiles. That way people have to use the same names when posting and there wouldn’t be any imposters. Also a seperate message board would probably be nice too.
If you put naigation at the top, see if you can add java flyouts for the menu system. It’s alot cleaner to look at.
