Moylan Amputates Leg, Will Play Saturday

Posted by Colestal on October 10th, 2006

IOWA CITY, IA — The Iowa Hawkeyes announced today that senior safety Devan Moylan, who suffered what was believed to be a season ending hamstring injury against Illinois, has amputated his own leg and will start Saturday at Indiana. The Hawkeye secondary has been devastated by injuries this season, and the return of Moylan signifies the unit’s return to top form.

Moylan, a senior from Panora, Iowa, removed the troublesome limb with a hacksaw earlier this week. Such a move is unprecedented in sports and is reminiscent of trapped climber Aron Ralston’s heroics in 2003.

“I tell you, this kid is one heck of a team player,” said head coach Kirk Ferentz. “We’ve seen a lot of positive things out of him throughout his career, but this one tops them all. We’re all excited to have him back at 100% out there.”

On Wednesday, strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle commented on Moylan’s physical condition.

“We clocked him at 4.52 in the 40 today, which is pretty good. He’s a tick slower than his 4.46 clocking during camp, but running on one leg is always a challenge.”

“The strength is still there. He’s not quite at the weight he was when he broke the safety squat record, but he can still throw up 500 pounds without breaking a sweat.”

Athletic Director Gary Barta suggested that the move could improve the fairness of the games. “Normally we would not encourage this type of behavior from our student athletes, but in this case we believe he might have leveled the playing field. Our opponents now have a safer environment in which to compete.”

Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner commented on Moylan’s return during his press conference today.

“We’re fucked,” said a clearly distraught Hoeppner.

The Hawkeyes visit Indiana on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:03 AM Central Standard Time. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Great article! This is what so many people come to this site to read. I can’t wait to see Moylan on the field lighting up some Hoosiers one-leg style!

uh is he really playing? you’ve got me all excited/confused now

  3. 3 HoorayBeer

maybe someone should take that initiative towards andyram and amputate the beer from his hand

For the record, he did not actually amputate his leg, although it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. Keep your fingers crossed that the NCAA gives him a medical redshirt.

Andyram could be missing all four limbs and you still couldn’t separate him and his booze. He’d just get one of those helmets with tubes running from the beers to your mouth. The only way to stop him is to kill him, and he’s proven that to be damn near impossible based on his 20 year survival.

…and now we have Google ads for prosthetic limbs. Sweet.

I would like to donate my good leg to Devan for next season (hard to type this with all eight fingers crossed) since I’m not using it…

Not to mention, I could really bring some cash to Hawkize when I start pounding away on the ads looking for a suitable limb replacement… anyone a doctor?

  7. 7 L McP

I would much rather see prosthetic limb ads then the alternative we used to have….

Ed, do you still shave your legs? because if you do I don’t know if Devan would appreciate that… at least it would be smooth…. oh btw.. I’m a CNA, that might be as close as you’re going to get to a doctor. I’m pretty good with a knife. =)

The leg shaving was my freshman year… and I got fucked out of the med at state; that was enough to nix leg shaving for me.

And as I recall… Moy shaved his legs during track his senior year… which, by the way Devan, you never lived up to your end of the deal we worked out about the med at Drake… but that’s okay. :)

At any rate, I’m all about Devan’s career continuing so as far as I’m concerned, my leg is his.

as i remember, your legs were shaved when i met you… which was after you graduated… =) I thought you just liked how it looked

It’s not necessarily the entire defense although they haven’t been up to par by any means.
I realize the secondary has had some issues with injuries, but what’s the deal with Adam Shada? Why the hell did they leave him in one on one coverage when Hardy had burned him twice already? I’ve never been a big fan of Shada, and, I will admit I did get excited on his 98 yard TD interception last week, but why didn’t they send some help on his side. He seems to get beat often and I can’t blame him when he has to go up against the opponents #1 guy, but shouldn’t Iowa be putting a saftey on his side of the field at least? It just pisses me off when we got beat primarily by one guy in the recieving core….from INDIANA. Also, is it me or have a lot of our receivers been dropping a shit load of balls, all of which are nearly accepted by safteys or corners behind them? I guess props to that shithead from Indiana who made the one hand intereception, although it killed my buzz.

God let’s hope we get some guys healthier next week, especially Dominique and King because Michigan is going to be a bitch. Fuck em.

    Go Hawks

  12. 12 Herbie

I’m stunned. WOW thats all I could say after the game. Good luck next week at Michigan.

Saying you’re ashamed to be a Hawk fan is a bit much, don’t you think… and questioning Ferentz is a step under cussing at Bob.

  14. 14 L McP

um yeah, agreed. we lose one game every year that we shouldn’t… chill out and support your team. (that includes ferentz) damn people.

  15. 15 hudhawk

when you become a hawkeye fan, let me know

  16. 16 Mikehawk

you’re ashamed to be a Hawk? Fuck off, Hudhawk. Ferentz has more coaching ability in his left nut than the rest of the Big 10 combined. If you EVER, EVER question Kirk again on my fucking website, I’ll end your posting shit so quickly you won’t be able to say Maurice Clarret.

  17. 17 hudhawk

after watchin that gay ass video of you guys dumping coolers over your heads, and actually seeing you guys, ive got better places to be and much much better hawk fans to spend my time on. good bye

  18. 18 hudhawk

and please, tell me to fuck off without a computer screen between us.

  19. 19 Colestal

Seriously, let’s be rational here. I doubt that losing to Indiana was at the top of any of our lists of things we wanted to do this weekend, but upsets are going to happen. Yes, it’s frustrating. Yes, I drank myself retarded during and after the game. And hell yes, I was back to supporting the Hawks by Sunday. Thank God you’re not a Cyclone fan, and deal with this loss in a responsible way.

  20. 20 Mikehawk

Hudhawk, you obviously don’t know that I’m a ten foot tall mountain man who showers in Vodka and feeds my children Shrimp Scampi. You’re going down, HARD.

  21. 21 hudhawk

obviously no one could tell that i was about 15 beers and alot of herb down when I left that comment. but no body tells me to fuck off. especially the mountain man

  22. 22 Σ

You’re right… I couldn’t… and not to start shit with another Hawk fan… but I’m going to back Mike, right or wrong.

As for ‘when you become a hawkeye fan, let me know.’ I am a hawk fan, as are 90% of the people here. Did you see me jump ship when they lost? — No… and the rest of us held tight too… like true fans.

  23. 23 hudhawk

    right
