I Guess He Missed PC Day At Training
Happy Monday from the Hawkize crew. For those of you that didn’t see this weeks game on ESPNU, you missed this broadcast booth gem from commentator Brian Kinchen. (Wince) Ex-nay on the gay-say. Yea, I know what you’re all thinking….he’ll be sacking groceries by Wednesday.
There was also a football game on Saturday, and it was good. Frustrating turnovers, penalties, and mistakes, however, made the game a lot closer than it needed to be in the 3rd quarter. But all in all it was a solid win by the Hawks. Jake Christensen looked very solid, especially considering he is a red-shirt freshman. He had some really good throws and got some help from his recievers as well. He showed incredible poise on the 4th and 3 throw in the 4th quarter. The QB position looks like it will be in good hands for the next 3 years. AY showed up in force and the only think that could stop the offense was itself.
He didn’t end up paralyzed below the waist, but Garrett Wolfe didn’t do shit. I was very happy with the defense, as it played in typical Hawkeye fashion and made yards tough to come by - NI ended up with only 196 yards of offense, with 158 of those coming off its two scoring drives in the 3rd quarter. As mentioned above, those drives only existed because of mistakes.
In closing, if anyone knows what the hell the deal is with Kyle Schlicher, please let us know.

I think everyone is a lil quick to jump on the hating kyle bandwagon. one un-usual game for him, cut him a lil slack. see what happens next week then we’ll know. but if anyone knows what the hell is up with the receivers and the one dropped pass on every possesion, let us know.
I don’t know hud, I think the heat Kyle is taking is deserved. The main reason being that he is a senior and was a pre-season Groza canidate. His sophmore year he was 21/26 for 80.8% and his junior year he was 17/21 for 80%. This year so far he is 11/16, which gives him a 68.8% and in the bottom half of all kickers in the country. To give you a little perspective on that number, Iowa States Brett Culbertson has a better percentage (75% but with less kicks 6/8). I’m also still pissed about the two kicks he missed at Indiana which ended up costing us the game or atleast overtime. And against NI, we could have been up 23-14 instead of 17-14 in the 3rd when NI came back. I know we won this weekend, but Iowa is better than having a liability at kicker. Thats for the ISUs of the world to worry about. The game against Wisconsin is going to be a war, and we are going to need all the points we can get. I have a hunch that special teams will be the deciding factor in that game.
On the recievers, I’m tired of beating that dead horse. They are just inconsistent, ie ball hits Chandler in the hands and it gets picked, next drive he makes a one handed grab Randy Moss would be proud of. As to why they are inconsistent, you’d have to ask them.
Apologizes for the “Kinda gay” link not working. I guess ESPN caught wind of it being on the net and is doing damage control.
you need to find that! I wanna see it! But yeah i havent looked at the numbers for kyle. your right, pretty inconsistent. hopefully he will come through in crunch time in the next few games, cause he will be needed for atleast one of those. whats the next kicker iowa’s got lined up look like anyway?
Could Schlicher’s struggles possibly be stemming from being not fully recovered from his early season injuries? An interesting note is the fact that Schlicher doesn’t handle all kickoffs for the first time his career. We are talking about a guy who this year has only kicked off 11 times for an average of 56.4 yards with only 2 touchbacks. In 2005 he kicked off 69 times for an average of 61.1 yards with 27 touchbacks. In 2004 he kicked off 67 times for an average of 61.2 yards with 22 touchbacks. Basically this means that in his limited time kicking off this season he’s average 6 less yards a kick and has only boomed it for a touchback 18% of the time whereas he hit the paydirt at about a 36% clip in the previous two years. So maybe that right leg isn’t quite what it used to be……..
Hudhawk,
As for the next kicker in line, Austin Signor has done well when given the chance. He handles the majority of the kickoffs with 37 so far this year with an average of 62.2 yards and has hit 14 of them for touchbacks. Numbers very similar if not slightly better than the “old” Kyle Schlicher. He’s also 2-2 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. If memory serves me correctly both of those came in the opening game against Montana and he looked very impressive while filling in for an injured Schlicher.
Let’s not forget Daniel Murray from our very own Iowa City Regina. He walked on here and has a shot at the kicking gig as well. Based on his 50 yarders from the 1A state championship game last year, I’d say he has a chance to be pretty good too.
